Team History

In 1907, Sporting played their first football match on 3 February, losing 5-1 to Cruz Negra, with D João de Vila Franca scoring the clubs first goal. On 4 July, they opened Sítio das Mouras, Portugals most advanced facility at the time, featuring a grass field, tennis courts, an athletics track, and showers, funded largely by the Alvalade family. The first derby against Sport Lisboa (later Benfica) on 1 September 1907 ended in a 2-1 victory for Sporting, marking the start of a historic rivalry. By 1908, Sporting debuted green and white halved shirts, and in 1910, the second constitution introduced an audit committee. The club also played their first international match, defeating Spains Huelva 2-0.

Sporting quickly became a multisport institution, excelling in football, athletics, and other disciplines. António Stromp, Gabriel Ribeiro, and Alfredo Cemecelha won titles in pole vault, high jump, and weightlifting, respectively, by 1910. The club moved through several grounds: Sítio das Mouras (1906-1917), Estádio do Campo Grande (1917-1937), and Estádio do Lumiar (1937-1956). In 1956, the first Estádio José Alvalade opened, serving until 2003. These venues reflected Sportings ambition to provide top facilities.

Primeira Liga is a name that was first used in 1934, four years before the official establishment of a national league in Portugal. When football in the country was reformed in 1938, the new competition was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão (National Championship of the First Division) or simply Primeira Divisão (First Division), a name that remained in use until 1999. Porto were the first champions, they retained their title next season, and have remained one of Portugals Big Three, as they, Benfica and Sporting are called.
